Wandering Seattle

I love exploring cities, the bits where people really live and spend their time, well away from the throngs of tourists. I like getting coffee from independent coffee shops and food that is made fresh and using local, seasonal produce.

We lucked out completely in Seattle as we spent Sunday wandering around Ballard and Fremont. Both districts hold their markets on a Sunday so the community was out in force and we were able to sample some of the freshest produce around.

Once we had exhausted the markets and said “hello” to the Fremont Troll we took a walk over the hill to the Queen Anne district from where we could marvel at the skyline and the beautiful natural harbour.

Touristing Seattle

The Seattle Underground tour provides a fascinating glimpse into the waterlogged, muddy and slightly sordid history of the city.

The city was initially built on the edge of a natural harbour, at the foot of steep mountains and below the high tide line, genius thinking I’m sure you’ll agree. Following a devastating fire, the city was re-built: gradually raising the buildings out of the water and decreasing the steep gradient of the downtown area whilst allowing business to continue as normal.

What this means is that just by stepping through an unassuming door and down a single flight of stairs you can enter an underground world, immediately becoming oblivious to the people walking along the pavement just above your head.

Once underground you can see the brickwork that creates the underside of the pavement, and the supporting beams that stop the pavements caving in. Also visible are the huge damn walls that keep the water back and reduce the gradient of the streets to an optimum 18 degrees.

The underground world is frequently used as a set for film crews and after a large earthquake in the mid 20th century it provided a rubbish dump for old signs so it is difficult to date much of the ephemera that is propped up against the walls.

Canucks

This weekend we went to see the Canucks play. It was something I had wanted to do since we arrived, and became determined to do after getting swept up in the Stanley Cup finals in June. We managed to get tickets for the last pre-season match this weekend and wow am I glad we did. We bought tickets off Craigslist for less than half the price that we would have paid at the box office, which meant that our seats gave us an awesome view of the whole arena. (Had we bought them on our measly budget I would have needed binoculars I’m certain.

It was my first North American sporting event, and my goodness it’s really quite an extraordinary experience. The stadium was huge, thousands of seats stacked up on one another from rink-side to rooftop, which meant that the noise from the crowd was spectacular when the Canucks won.

During every advert break glamorous girls come on and sweep the ice (‘ice bunnies’ I’m informed) and cameras are turned on the audience looking out for dancing kids and unsuspecting couples with the kiss-cam. There was also a dancing, drumming mascot who was fun to watch as he interacted with the crowd.

The game was great, and I managed to keep up with it better than I had expected, the puck really does move remarkably quickly. It also makes a huge sound whenever the puck hits a stick. The one thing I wasn’t so keen on was the fight; gratuitous unnecessary violence really isn’t my bag.
