Leaving Vancouver, heading west

We left Vancouver rather inauspiciously by bus. It felt strange to be making this big step in our lives simply by walking a couple of blocks and getting on the same bus as Mike has taken to work for the last year. I felt a little sentimental as we drove through Stanley park, wondering when and if we might ever be back. From the North Shore Highway, I kept glancing back to catch my last glimpses of the city. For the most part though, I’m excited about our trip.

We took the ferry over to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in glorious sunshine. Sitting at the back of the boat we were able to watch the mainland recede into the distance, marvelling at the mountains that creep right up to the coast and occasionally catching glimpses of the snowy caps of the larger ones behind. Downtown Vancouver appeared once we had rounded the bend, the buildings lit up like fluorescent bulbs as the sunlight reflected off the glass. We spent a while trying to identify different buildings before being distracted by some dolphins and the other islands we were passing.

The Great Canadian Adventure begins…

In July, when winter time and moving home seemed like a long long way away, we hatched a plan to take an overland route across Canada, to see as much of the country as possible before our move back to the UK in November. When we hatched this genius plan of ours, we were waiting to get on a train in Montreal. We were admiring the regimented queuing system adopted in stations across North America, waxing lyrical about the joys of train travel, and preparing ourselves for a 3 hour journey to our next destination.

Fast forward a mere three months and here we are. We’ve quit our jobs and packed, shipped or sold all our worldly goods. Over the next month Mike and I will be travelling across Canada (around 8,061 kilometers) by boat, car, bus and train. Here is where we’ll be going:

Canadian trip mapIn the course of 28 days we will:

  • Spend around 93 hours on trains
  • 26 hours on boats
  • sleep in 17 beds, although 2 of these are chairs so I don’t think they count
  • Take 1,000,000 pictures (each!) Estimate.

Last week in Vancouver

Our last week in Vancouver passed in a blur. I thought I would have more time to savour each experience, to say my own personal farewell to the city. However, despite the occasional pang of nostalgia as I rushed about running errands, it still hasn’t really hit me that tomorrow I won’t be waking up to see the mountains out of my bedroom window.

Van Dusen Gardens

Autumn is probably my favourite season in Vancouver, so I’m really glad we were able to stay and see the leaves begin to turn, and to experience the incredible light as the days start to get shorter. Walking through fallen leaves brings out my inner child and I find it almost impossible to resist stomping through them when I see piles at the side of the road. There is something so satisfying about the sound of footsteps on dry leaves.

Van Dusen Botanical Gardens are situated a bit outside the city centre and as a result (and the entry fee, I assume) they are generally a lot quieter than many of Vancouver’s other parks and gardens. This is probably one of the reasons they are one of my favourites. These pictures were all taken this weekend when the garden was bathed in low lying golden sunlight and all the trees had put on their autumnal coats.

Van Dusen Gardens

On Friday night my work threw me a surprise leaving party which was great fun, despite my ruining the surprise. It was a sharp wake-up call that our days here are numbered. Consequently, we filled most of the rest of the weekend with packing avoidance. We spent time with friends, ate delicious fish and chips from Go Fish and played dress-up picking out new glasses for me. We also took advantage of the sunshine and played tourist in Vancouver, wandering around Granville Island and Van Dusen Gardens admiring the incredible autumnal colours.
